Gosport Borough certainly left no stone unturned when selecting their new manager.
In the end, Simon Lane was appointed into the hot-seat, bringing almost three decades of managerial experience with him to the Pitching In Southern League Premier South club.
“We had a total of 11 hours’ conversation across the interviews,” Lane told his club’s media. “The Board certainly did their homework on me and the club’s due diligence cannot be faulted.
“During this process I’ve learned a lot about the characters involved here and it’s clear that our objectives are aligned on how we take the club into a new era and do things slightly differently than they have been done previously.
“This is a huge club and I want to help make it even bigger. I want to give the fans a product that they will enjoy.
“I am massively excited by the challenge ahead. Things won’t happen overnight, but I’ve already got stuck into the workload and early progress has been made.
“I want us to be energetic and organised. One of my top priorities is to get a playing identity. I also want to be able to tap into local talent, of which there is plenty.
“I’m not afraid to give youth a chance, but at the same time I am aware that this is a brutal and physical level of football, so some balance is needed.
“I’ll be using my own experience – I have been a manager for 27 seasons now – to ensure that we get to where we want to be. I have had to evolve in the way I do things; I am a keen student of the game and believe that you are always learning.
“Now I can’t wait to get the players out there and start our preparations for the new season.”
