CHERTSEY TOWN | STRONG MINDS

Toby Little relishing the challenge at the Premier South club

Pitching In Southern League Premier South outfit, Chertsey Town, certainly didn’t rest on their laurels when they decided to make a change in the hot-seat earlier this month.

Having parted company with Josh Gallagher, The Curfews immediately promoted player-coach, Toby Little, into the top job.

His first League game ended in a much-needed 2-0 triumph at Taunton Town before they succumbed to a late goal in a 2-1 reverse at Basingstoke Town on Tuesday evening.

“The performance that we put in at Taunton was really pleasing,” Little told us. “Not many teams will go there and come away with all three points this season. We competed well, defended resolutely and were a threat going forward.

“We battled well on Tuesday night, particularly when we went down to ten men, but were undone deep into stoppage time with a penalty for handball. It was a tough one to take because we deserved something from the game.

“But I know what we’ve got here and I have full belief in this group of players. I can already sense the unity in the team and around the club and that will take us a long way.

“The season so far has been stop-start. We’ve had some good performances but then not matched them with positive results.

“This League is just as demanding mentally as it is physically, so we need strong minds for the challenges that stand before us. I’m up for the challenge and I know that my players are too.

“The composition of this League hasn’t changed much over recent years. You often get two or three clubs battling it out for the title, a couple of clubs that struggle and then small margins between the rest.

“Put bluntly, our aim is to finish the season higher than the 16th place we achieved last year. We want to be competing in the top half of the table by Christmas and if we can do that, anything is possible during the second half of the campaign.”

Little faces his first home League game at the helm on Saturday when Bracknell Town provide the opposition.
