SHOLING | POWER PLAY

Big result in the battle to make the Premier South play-offs

Sholing did their hopes of securing a top five finish the power of good at the weekend as they beat fellow play-off hopefuls, Chertsey Town, 4-0 to leapfrog their opponents.

On a day when everything went right for the Pitching In Southern League Premier South club, it was even more special for Tommy Lee Higgs, who weighed in with a hat-trick.

“It was a fantastic result and we were all buzzing at the end,” Higgs told us. “Of course, it was nice for me to get a hat-trick, but it’s the team that creates the opportunities for me, so it’s as much about them as it is me.

“To a man we put in a great shift, from start to finish. We executed our game plan very well and I was there to finish off the chances.

“It’s a massive three points for us against opponents who had been in great form and are challenging us for that final play-off place.

“The season overall has been a bit up and down for me, but football is a roller-coaster where anything can happen and things can change quickly.

“The team has been grafting hard all season and as we get into the final run-in, it’s all about keeping the momentum going and pushing as hard as we can to achieve our goals.

“For me, this is the best part of the season. Every game becomes more important than the last and we have to keep standards high and give everything we’ve got for those precious three points that are on offer.

“This is an exciting League where anyone can beat anyone on their day. There are some really top players and top teams involved, so it’s just a fantastic challenge and a very high standard of football.

“I want to keep contributing with goals. That was only the second hat-trick of my career last weekend, the first for Sholing, so it has whetted my appetite for more! To do it in such an important game makes it extra special and I go into the run-in full of confidence.

“This is a special football club and we’ll give it everything we’ve got between now and the end of the season and see where it takes us.”

A trip to Hungerford Town – who are battling for the points for different reasons – awaits on Saturday.
