STOURBRIDGE | FAMILY FEEL FOR FREEMAN

Summer signing believes that the Glassboys can be a surprise package this season

Three games in and Stourbridge are one of seven teams in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central who remain unbeaten.

Two draws and a victory have made it a solid start for Darryl Knights’ new-look side as they go into the Bank Holiday weekend, which starts with a home game against Spalding United on Saturday and then a trip to Banbury United on Monday.

One of the numerous new faces that checked in over the summer was Ruben Freeman, who made the perfect start to his Glassboys’ career with a Man of the Match display on the opening day of the campaign and a couple of solid outings in the next two games.

Freeman believes that the ‘family feel’ around the place is what has helped him to hit the ground running and that the team has the potential to surprise a few people this season.

“It feels like one big family here and that’s what has helped me settle in quickly,” he told us. “Everyone, from the management to team-mates, volunteers and supporters have been brilliant with me.

“There’s a real togetherness amongst the group already. The Gaffer has made clear what he wants from us and we are working hard to deliver it and make an impact this season.

“I think that this group will surprise a few people this season. It’s a young group but there is so much talent here and a determination to get this club moving forward.

“I’ve played at this level before with Barwell so I know how intense and competitive it can be. There are some big clubs up against us this season, but we’re ready to take them on. It’s going to be a fight for every point, but we say bring it on!

“We’re prepared to roll our sleeves up and battle hard. I know already that the supporters here appreciate hard work and commitment to the cause and these are qualities that I feel I bring to the group.

“I want to be a reassuring presence in the back-line, allowing us to play higher and more attacking.

“I think with the group being so young we are all determined to push on not just for the team but also for our own careers, so everyone's aim and targets will be the same and that’s to win as many games as we can, whilst producing entertaining football.

“For myself personally I want to just improve as a player as much as possible this year; I feel that the Gaffer and his staff can bring the best out of me and hopefully I am able to do it on a consistent basis week in, week out because that’s what you need to be able to compete at this level.”
