When Bury Town were placed in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central during the summer following promotion, manager, Cole Skuse, knew that he had to bring in some experience of the level they were going into.
Step forward George Quantrell. The accomplished attack-minded midfielder appeared 50 times for Leiston last season, weighing in with 19 goals as they secured their place just inside the top ten.
His signature was an important bit of business for the Suffolk club and having found the net in each of the last four games, he has proved to be a key figure in the club’s solid start to the campaign which has seen them take ten points from the opening six games, as well as progression in the Emirates FA Cup where a home tie against Woodford Town awaits at the weekend.
Quantrell was on the mark in Saturday’s 2-0 away triumph at Stamford AFC, as the club got their first away League win of the season.
“It was a good win,” he told us. “Any points secured away from home are precious in this League; we defended well throughout and created some good chances.
“It was just a good, solid team performance and yielded our first away win, which was nice. On a personal level, it was also good to get my name on the scoresheet once more.
“We’ve started the season well. Our performances have deserved more points than what we’ve got at the moment, but we’re happy with the position we’re in after the first six games and hopefully we can continue adding to our points tally.
“I’m happy with my own form so far; I’ve got a few goals to my name already and I’m enjoying it, which is the main thing.
“We went into the season expecting a tough campaign with a lot of travelling for the club and coming up against a number of new teams for the majority of the players here. It’s one of those where you just have to take each game as it comes; we’re confident in our own ability and believe that we can push on from here.
“As a group we want to be challenging as high up the table as we can. We’re playing with plenty of confidence right now and we’re all enjoying our football, so we want this to continue.”
A trip to fellow new-boys, Real Bedford, is on the agenda for Tuesday evening.
